Is There a Base Currency Effect in Long-Run PPP?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The base currency effect in the purchasing power parity (PPP) literature refers to the stylized fact that tests on German mark real exchange rates are more likely to support mean reversion than analogous tests on US dollar rates. Using a panel of 19 OECD currencies, 1973-1997, we employ different panel unit root approaches to investigate the view that this effect can be attributed to neglected cross-sectional dependence. While the results from panel methods which permit cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneous serial correlation generally support long-run PPP, they provide no evidence of a base currency effect. Purchasing Power Parity during Currency Crises: A Panel Unit Root Test under Structural Breaks
In this paper the relevance of the PPP as a long-run relationship is studied using a panel of Latin American and Asian countries. We investigate the stationarity of real exchange rates by applying a new panel unit root test that is robust to structural breaks due to currency crises. It turns out that the long-run PPP relationship is relevant for the Asian countries, which experienced a flexible...

In this paper, based on error correction model by using panel data, an empirical analysis of demand for international reserves for 16 Islamic countries is investigated. Besides addressing conventional issues, the model explicitly incorporates the impact of expected export revenues and the impact of the exchange rate system on reserve demand. The results reveal that, short run money market diseq...

متن کاملSearching for evidence of long-run PPP from a post-Bretton Woods panel: separating the wheat from the chaff
This paper reexamines the issue of long-run PPP using multiple panel tests in the framework of confirmatory analysis. Application of six panel tests under competing null hypotheses to the real exchange rates of 21 industrial countries yields seemingly contradictory evidence on the parity during the post-Bretton Woods period. Regardless of numeraire currency, four I(1) panel tests unanimously re...
